Google – Year in Search 2017

As 2017 draws to a close, Google have released their annual ‘Year in Search’. With the list separated into several sections, we at Gomie Design bring you the top ten in various categories, offering you a superb and somewhat nostalgic insight into the past twelve months.

The ten top trending searches cover everything from global tragedies such as the Manchester bombing, Hurricane Irma and the Grenfell Tower fire right through to the latest iPhone releases. September’s launch of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus was swiftly followed in November by the release of the iPhone X; released to mark the tenth anniversary of the first iPhone. Both phones feature in Goggle’s list but, the top trend on Google in 2017 was ‘Meghan Markle’.

The internet went into overdrive back in November after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement. Millions of excited Brits swiftly took to Google to find out everything there is to know about the soon-to-be-Princess.

If a question needs answering then Google has for a long time now been the go-to place. Therefore, the questions we ask the search engine will often mirror current affairs. This year’s snap election left us with so many questions. The UK public asked ‘what is a hung parliament?’, ‘what is an exit poll?’ and ‘what is the DUP?’

2017 also introduced Bitcoin to the masses, prompting us to ask, ‘what is Bitcoin?’, ‘how to buy Bitcoin’ and ‘how to mine Bitcoins?’.

The list also serves as a reminder that the Gomie Design team, like many others across the land, developed a slight obsession with the Antikythera mechanism back in May. Believed to be the world’s first computer, the mechanism dates back more than 2,000 years. The 115th anniversary of its discovery was celebrated by a Google Doodle.
